My Eco-Friendly Journey
You do not have to be perfect to help the environment. You only have to make a conscientious effort to make a change. Do what you can and accept the fact that you most likely will not be able to do it all. In the beginning stages of this new eco-friendly lifestyle, allow yourself room to grow. Do not compare yourself to others who may have been on this journey for a long time. Instead, allow them to be your encouragement and understand that no one is perfect. I will let you on to a little secret. Very rarely, if at all, will you see the shortcomings of others on the internet.
I don’t get it right every time with every product. I strive, too, and that is what is essential. Here are some items that I get right, and some I am still perfecting. I hope they encourage you along your journey to understand that it is just that, a journey.
Deodorants
Most nontoxic deodorants are very expensive, and they still come in plastic packaging. I have tried several types and have not found any that work for me. What I have elected to do is make my own. There are countless recipes on how to make nature deodorants that use natural ingredients that are not hurtful to the environment. One site in particular that has excellent resources is Beauty Munsta One more hack is to use limes after showering. The citric acid in limes kills bacteria that cause body odor. It’s cheap, natural is great for the environment.
Toothpaste
I want my breath to be fresh, and my teeth and gums to stay healthy. I have not found a natural toothpaste that does all of that. Homemade toothpaste is not making grades either. I have used both manufactured natural toothpaste as well as made my own for years. As a result, on my last dental appointment, I had to receive a deep clean around one of my teeth. I never had to have a deep clean on my gums ever! I was extremely upset. I am complimented by the dentist on how well I take care of my teeth at home. I returned to conventional toothpaste, but this doesn’t sit well with me due to unhealthy ingredients as well as the packaging. I have been doing research on David’s Toothpaste. According to their website, their ingredients are sourced and derived from nature, formula free from animal-derived ingredients, cruelty-free, and uses sustainable packaging. My only hesitation is the price tag, a whopping $9.95! Can’t put a price on health, I am strongly considering trying it out.
Shampoo
Shampoo is another item that I am still figuring out. I have Locs, so I need to have a product that does the job. I currently use Sunny Isle Shampoo infused with Jamaican Black Castor Oil. The oil used is organically grown in Jamaica, traditionally processed. I love the stuff, but the packaging is questionable. I love it because it cleans my hair without stripping and without leaving buildup. It is also free of parabens, sulfates, and all of the ugly stuff.
Moisturizers
As a moisturizer, I use three types of oil. I know it sounds like a lot; this works for me. For my body, I use 100% organic coconut oil. Dr. Bronners is an excellent choice. For my face, I use 100% Jojoba Oil and for my hair 100% Jamaican Black Castor oil f They are all purchased in glass containers!
Sometimes, it is difficult to find the products that you desire in sustainable packaging that are affordable. What we can do is contact the manufactures to voice our opinions; the only way change will come about. If we as individuals must be responsible for creating a safe environment for the future, so does the vast cooperations. Until then, continue to do your research and do the best that you can with the resources you have. Remember is not a race, yet a journey. Let me know in the comment section the products you use that have been successful. Until next time, strive to live a balanced and cumbersome free life. Peace and Love!
